This century’s threats are at least as dangerous as, and in some ways more complex than those we have confronted in the past. They come from sophisticated weapons that can kill on a mass scale, and from global terrorists who respond to alienation or perceived injustice with murderous nihilism. They come from state sponsors of terror allied to terrorists and from rising powers that could challenge the foundation of International Peace and Security.
But of all the threats to global security and peace, the most dangerous is the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Our world today is home to stockpiles of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that should be consolidated, secured, accounted for and destroyed.
Not only that these weapons or fissile materials could fall into the hands of terrorists who will definitely try to, or use them, but may be illicitly sold to other countries, groups, or individuals not capable of handling them. A number of non‑proliferation programs, including the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program and the Global Threat Reduction Initiative, have helped countries dismantle weapons, disband nuclear programs and safeguard remaining weapons and materials. However, over the past decade efforts to reign on new states gunning for WMD’s has declined due to lack of international consensus and cooperation.
Think about the consequences of a nuclear weapon explosion in one of the worlds’ major cities — be it New York or Moscow, Islamabad or Mumbai, Tokyo or Tel Aviv, Paris or Lagos, Toronto or Abu Dhabi — thousands and millions of people will die. And no matter where it happens, there is no end to what the consequences might be — for our global safety, our humanity, our economy, to our ultimate survival as a people.
At GlobalCops, we work to strengthen the global nuclear non-proliferation regime based on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), secure and reduce all vulnerable nuclear weapons-usable material throughout the world, and halt the spread of materials and weapons of mass destruction to state and non-state actors through activism, public campaigns, symposiums, and conferences.
Creating Awareness:
Through social media, street run activities (Run Against Nuclear Weapon), posters and bill board, television ads and one on one mentorship, we have continued to intensify awareness on the dangers of radicalization and terrorism. So far, we have reached astronomical numbers in terms of our awareness interventions. We also deploy bumper stickers (stickers of all kind), Print T-Shirts and other print materials with message against Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction that we give out free of charge to young people in High Schools, Colleges and Universities around the USA & abroad. We also hold town halls, seminars, and conferences on this subject.
